You can explore without tokens. $DAG is used for land protection and purchases.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. This is an early preview, so updates may still reset the world.

What happens when I die?

You drop everything you carry where you fell. A gravestone on your compass points back to it, but anyone can pick it up, and it disappears after about 15 minutes.
