Biomes
Temperature and humidity vary across the world. They determine the biome, vegetation, grass and leaf colors, and where snow or ice appears. Climate regions are large: crossing a cold or dry region can take a long journey. There is no guaranteed minimum distance between snow and desert.
Biomes you can find
| Biome | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Rainforest | Dense vegetation and trees, including large trees |
| Swamp | A mild, humid climate |
| Seasonal forest | Trees and plenty of yellow flowers |
| Forest | Oaks, birches, and some large trees |
| Savanna | A dry climate and scattered vegetation |
| Shrubland | Open terrain with few trees |
| Taiga | Conifers and a cold climate |
| Desert | Sand, cacti, and dead bushes |
| Plains | Grass, flowers, and very few trees |
| Tundra | A cold climate, snow, and very few trees |
Terrain and climate
A biome does not determine the height of the land. Mountains, valleys, cliffs, overhangs, and flat areas can appear in different climate regions. Large climate regions do not mean larger mountains.
Snow depends on both local temperature and height. In the coldest areas, the surface of the water can freeze too. Steep terrain exposes stone beneath the soil.
Vegetation and water
Besides trees, you can find tall grass, flowers, mushrooms, reeds, cacti, and dead bushes. Their abundance depends on the area and whether they have suitable ground and enough room.
Clusters of fibrous plants also grow on grass. Look for their long, tough leaves. You can walk through them and collect them by hand: each plant gives 2 vegetable fibers, enough to craft one rope in your inventory. Search grassy clearings; they do not grow on sand or underwater. Rope binds the head to the handle of stone and iron tools.
You can find large bodies of water, beaches, lakes, and springs. You can swim and climb out onto a bank. Water does not flow continuously yet: removing a block beside it does not make it spread into the gap.
