The world

New terrain extends horizontally and reaches from y = 0 to y = 127. The deeper underground area down to y = -64 is not available yet.

From the surface to bedrock

The landscape includes mountains, valleys, cliffs, plains, and large bodies of water. Sea level is around y = 64. Climate determines the vegetation, snow, and ice.

Below the surface, you will find stone, caves, and mineral veins. New terrain does not contain distinct rock regions or a deep rock layer. See Underground rocks.

Bedrock forms the bottom of the world, between y = 0 and y = 4, with an uneven upper edge. You cannot break it.

Useful things to know

Auto-jump is on by default. When you walk toward a one-block step, you jump automatically as you reach its edge, provided there is room above you. Turn it off in Settings → Auto-jump; your choice is saved in this browser. You can still jump manually.

You can move through water and swim. Water does not flow continuously yet: removing a block beside it does not make it spread into the gap.

You can build on the terrain outside protected areas. Bedrock cannot be broken.

You spawn on the surface, at a habitable spot near the world's origin, never inside stone or a cave.

If blocks cover the spawn point when you return, you appear in the first safe space above them. You will not spawn in or on lava or a cactus, or above a pit with a fatal drop. Your first visit uses the same safety checks. Choose Respawn after dying to return to spawn.

Compass and coordinates

The compass is at the top right. Its moving strip shows N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW, with marks every 5 degrees and longer marks every 15. The yellow triangle in the middle shows the direction you are facing. It does not display a degree number. A gravestone also marks the location of your last death; see Health and death.

Below it, your coordinates show X, Y, and Z for the block at your feet. Y is your height; walking north decreases Z, and walking east increases X. The name of the block you are looking at appears below the coordinates; see Blocks. F1 hides these displays along with the rest of the interface.

Protected spawn

The 9×9 chunks around spawn are protected. You cannot build, mine, use chests, or claim land inside this area.

The area where land claims are forbidden is larger: 15×15 chunks centered on spawn. No part of a claim may enter it, even if the protection core is outside. Between this boundary and the protected 9×9 area, you can build and mine normally.

The terrain around spawn blends gradually into the surrounding landscape. Buildings and excavations inside the protected area are preserved.

A blue-gray grid appears as you approach the boundary. Its thin outline makes it visible against the sky and terrain, even in daylight, and you can see it from either side. It fades when you move more than about 10 blocks away. Hold a Protection viewer to see the boundary more clearly and from farther away.

Crossing the boundary displays “Entering protected spawn” or “Leaving protected spawn”.
